Robert Pippin, who also dabbles in philosophy, is our greatest film theorist of the moment. From his seminal books on film noir, and Westerns, to this latest tour de force on Hitchcock, no one better traces the vertiginous spirals of man's tendency to self-deception than this Hegelian's Hegelian. You don't need ta know nuthin bout all that highfalutin stuff, though, in order to read and revel in this lovely book infused with enlightening, careful "reading" of a film that rewards close attention. If Hitchcock was an auteur, Pippin is the cineaste the master's films implicitly assumed and helped to create. Not since Stanley Cavell at his best have we had books on film like this.
